A Familiar Story with a Modern Look

Gameplay and story-wise, Tomb Raider Remastered stays true to the originals. These first three games, despite being released between 1996 and 1998, are not about depicting the origin story of Lara Croft. They actually take place later in the timeline, after the events of the more recent trilogy (2013-2018). For those in need of a refresher, here’s a quick look back at the first three games:

Tomb Raider 1: Lara embarks on a perilous adventure to retrieve the Scion of Atlantis while thwarting the nefarious plans of Jacqueline Natla and Natla Technologies. Her journey takes her from Peru to various global locales. She unravels a dark secret and strives to prevent a global catastrophe.

Tomb Raider 2: Lara seeks the Dagger of Xian, a mystical artifact in Tibet. The Dagger can transform its possessor into a dragon. Her pursuit leads her to the shadowy Fiamma Nera. They aim to harness the dagger’s power for sinister purposes.

Tomb Raider 3: Lara becomes entangled in a web of intrigue across multiple continents and time periods. She is tasked with recovering four mysterious artifacts known as the Infada Stones. Lara faces a sinister conspiracy orchestrated by the “Sons of the Ruler”. It culminates in a race against time to prevent a cataclysmic event.

Rumors and a Glimpse into the Future

Behind the scenes, Tomb Raider I-III Remastered is being developed by Aspyr. The same team responsible for titles like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, and MythForce. Rumor has it that the remaster’s launch will coincide with an official announcement from Square Enix, the franchise’s publisher. The company is reportedly working on “unifying the timelines” and potentially bringing old Lara Croft full circle in a fourth and potentially final chapter for the 2013 rebooted series. These are all just rumours though. At this point all we can do is wait and see. Check out the upcoming games of 2024.
